Unclean Food

I grew up in a non-religious Jewish household. My grandparents were Holocaust survivors and most of their families were murdered at the hands of the nazis.

When I was born again I struggled to understand what I was supposed to be doing and how I was supposed to be following Jesus. If I was supposed to he obeying the law… did I need to obey the law out of my love for Jesus?  It took me a long time to understand the Christ fufilled the law on the cross.

For a whole year i didnt eat bacon or shellfish and felt very condemned when i did… i thought it was Jesus convicting me to stop. When i realized it was not Jesus i went out and ate a bacon cheeseburger, hah.

Recently I watched my grandmother’s testimony of escaping the nazis in Poland WW2. She was 14 and hiding in barns, begging people to please help her so that she wouldnt be killed like so many other Jews.

She went to a neighbor and begged them for food. She hadn’t eaten in days. They gave her a piece of bread and some bacon. My 14 year old grandmother was afraid to eat it because of the Jewish dietary laws.

As soon as I heard that part of her story, Jesus gave me understanding that “unclean food” has nothing to do with actual food. That unclean food refers to false doctrine. Jesus told His disciples He has food they dont know of… He wasnt talking about burgers and fries… He was talking about the Spirit of Truth. He was telling them they needed to be born again.

Jesus cares about our hearts and about reconciliation with Him… not the physical food we eat. You must be born again.

I am starting to realizing that everything in the law is simply a parable of the spiritual. Life and death. We’re either born again or dead in sin. Alive or dead.

Touching a dead body makes people “unclean” under the law… but Jesus called the Pharisees open graves… their religious doctrine void of the Spirit is the “dead body” that makes a person unclean.

Everything under the law means something different than I thought. Everything. Just some food for thought. Pun intended. Lol

For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. Romans 7:14

  3. Many people struggle with this question because after all we do have to eat to sustain our life. It’s true Jesus did fulfill the law,but He DID NOT CHANGE THE LAW. The food laws we find in Leviticus is still in effect.(Leviticus 11). They are given for us for the health of our bodies. So is it a sin to eat pork or bacon etc, of course not,nor will you be struck dead, but our life will be shortened because of it.
I can’t tell you how many people I know who have suffered from a diet with high fat and pork they would not give up or at least not have as much of it. Our bodies were made with God in mind to help us live a long life. Be Blessed.

  4. Hebrews 7:11, 12 popped unto my head after reading this, but I understand what you mean about the health benefits. There is so much about this that we are all still coming to realize, including just how free we really are in Christ Jesus.

  5. Hebrews 7:11,12 is teaching of “The law of the priesthood” Jesus brought a better priesthood by the sacrifice of Himself for He has become our high priest, since the law made men high priests with weakness therefore it is consecrated forever now through Christ (Hebrews 7:26-28). This does not change the food laws which this post is about. God Bless your day.

  6. I’ve found that you can prove any point you want to prove (right or wrong) by pulling out specific scriptures….it is only when we look at the Word of God as a whole that we see the bigger picture, which is Christ.

For me it was pepperoni 😉

  7. Haha@ pepperoni lol… I agree that we can use the scriptures to create our own doctrines… only Christ can open a person’s heart and mind to give understanding when we seek Him for truth…

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment! God bless!
